Things I've Learned as a Mom

With Tanner's first birthday and it being summer break, I've had some time to reflect on the past year. I decided to make two different lists to describe my journey. I included a few random pictures, too.

Things I’ve learned as a Stay-at-Home-Mom
·         My body is so amazing. It grew a baby inside my belly, it knew exactly how to get the baby out, it healed correctly and then it made baby food! There have been so many amazing things that my body has gone through, some gross, some painful, but mostly amazing.
·         Baby clothes lie about their size. Don’t wait until baby is 6 months old to put size 6 month clothes on him. It will be too late!
·         Every time we travel, Tanner gets sick 1-2 days after the trip. So plan accordingly.
·         It’s very easy to get worried about every curve, wrinkle, fuzz and dimple on my baby. I’ve never been so worried about things as I have with my baby.
·         There IS a way to not worry so much. Do everything you can, then trust in the Lord! God will let you know if you need to keep worrying or not.
·         Baby poop will stain clothes terribly, so clean the poop explosions right away!
·         Breastfeeding takes a lot of time. I wish someone would have told me that even though baby eats every 2-3 hours, all I’ll do is feed, change baby, work at putting baby to sleep, rest for 15 minutes and then start all over again.
·         When going places, don’t put anything in the trunk except the stroller. You will need everything at some point during the drive.
·         Priesthood power is amazing.
·         If I keep at it, I’ll get the hang of it. This I especially learned with breastfeeding. Tanner didn’t latch on correctly for a while, so I used a nipple shield. Then we had thrush and yeast. I wanted to give up several times. But with the encouragement from friends and family, I kept with it.  And it really did get easier, it even got FUN! We ended up breastfeeding for 10 months, which was longer than I thought we’d do!!

·         It is impossible to take too many pictures of my baby and my family. Sometimes I regret that I didn’t take more.
·         Always trust my motherly instincts. Mama knows best. I think the Spirit has a lot to do with “motherly instincts.”
·         Follow my baby’s lead. If he’s not ready for it, don’t force it! This also has to do with listening to the “motherly instincts.”
·         Try to take the annoying things in stride. There’s nothing you can do right now about the drawer that you just bashed your leg into, or the trash-can that fell over, or the onesie that won’t snap correctly. These things drive me NUTS, so it is very hard to be patient. But I must try to just take it in stride!
·         It really is okay to just let the dishes and the floor stay dirty. It’s more important to be with my baby. Besides, he’ll clean the floor when he drags his legs around while crawling!
·         When going out, take every opportunity you have to change the diaper. It could be hours before you get another chance.
·         Prayer can go a long way, and God does answer prayers.
·         The more you pray humbly, the more your prayers will change to His will. For example, some nights I would pray earnestly and specifically that Tanner would sleep through the night. And on those nights, he would! Other times I would try praying for Tanner to sleep through the night, but the Spirit would tell me that I should pray for Tanner to get the rest he needs and pray to have patience if he wakes up in the middle of the night. And that made it so that God could still answer my prayers!
·         It’s true that if you throw the baby around too much after they eat, then they will throw up on you. I used to think that other moms were being way over protective, but now I know otherwise.
Things I’ve learned as a Working Mom:
·         As time goes on, it gets harder and harder to drop my baby off with someone else. I was not expecting this. I figured it would get easier and easier.
·         My Mama-Wolf-Nose is still powerful when I’m away from my baby.  I didn’t expect to feel so upset the first few days when I picked Tanner up from Daycare. He did not smell like me! I had to accept that it was okay for him to smell like someone else.
·         Some days are going to be harder than others. And that’s okay.
·         The two most important people on the planet are Jeremy and Tanner. This governs all decision making.
·         Again I learned that Priesthood power is amazing. Jeremy gave me a blessing before I started work. I often thought back to the words he said, and it helped me get through some very tough times.
·         Once again, I learned that prayer can go a long way.
·         And the more you try to seek God’s will, the more your prayers will change to His will. For example, sometimes I would try praying that I could get everything done that I need to at work. But with the Spirit’s help, my prayers changed. Instead, I prayed that I would get the most important things done that day and that I would be able to keep perspective on what matters most.
·         It IS possible to leave work at 4:00 every day!
·         A healthy baby truly is a happy baby. A sick baby messes up a lot of things.
·         For lunches at work, use pre-made fresh  lunches from the grocery store; cheaper, healthier, easier.
·         It sucks not having any family nearby to help out, especially when you are in a bind for a babysitter. But with prayer, the Lord always provides someone to come to the rescue!
·         Time is precious. Enjoy the moment- no matter where you are or who you’re with.

·         When it gets too overwhelming to wash baby bottles and nipples, just go buy more. It’s worth the $5.
·         In order to survive, I have to care less about menial things. There just isn’t time to worry about every detail at work, so my motto at work became “Care LESS about it!” This was very liberating, and it allowed me to manage my time better at work.
·         There is more than one way for people to take care of my baby, and that is okay (to an extent, of course). For the most part, he was fine!
·         Without a good Saturday to clean up from the week and a good Sunday to prepare for the next week, life gets really messy.
·         Everything is better when Jeremy is around.
·         Once again I learned that not only do I enjoy teaching, God wants me working with children.
·         Being a working mom is sometimes really, really hard.
·         When I want to give up and think I can’t go any further, just say a prayer and focus on getting through the next 5 minutes of life. Then repeat until I get through the entire day.
·         Having my own child makes teaching other children more meaningful. I found myself thinking as I taught “I should give this child the same attention that I want Tanner’s teachers to give to Tanner” And “This child is just as special to God as Tanner, so don’t brush aside his needs” And “This girl was once a sweet little baby like Tanner, so give her all the love she deserves.”
·         Having 600 students makes being a mom more meaningful. I found myself thinking as I was home with Tanner “I should start telling Tanner which hand is his right hand so that he’ll know by the time he is in Kindergarten” And “Even though it’s late, I need to read Tanner his books” And “If I can get Tanner to love veggies now, maybe he won’t choose corndogs every day for lunch like some of my students!”

·         Even though there are many days where it seems like no one appreciates me, that is far from the truth! People DO care about what I do.
·         It’s really important to help others feel appreciated for what THEY do. All I have to do is tell them!! (And they will be much more willing to support me in the future)
·         The love that I have for my students is not much different than the love I have for Tanner. My son is the most important child to me in the world, but I love all my students in a very similar way. It’s so cool that my job gives me hundreds of children to love!
·         Sometimes Heavenly Father blesses us by giving us another challenge or trial in life. This is a very interesting concept to me that I keep learning about. Perhaps I’ll blog more about this later.
·         I am never alone. Heavenly Father is always aware of me and my needs.
·         Without having Tanner, I never would have learned how to manage my time or manage my eternal priorities. I am SO grateful for him and Jeremy in my life!!

Independence Day!

On Monday, July 2, Tanner and I drove up to West Hollywood to spend the afternoon and evening with my friend Taryn. We went to the Grove, 3rd Street Promenade, and her neighborhood park. We ate crepes, ice cream cones, fish tacos, and we made green velvet cupcakes!
On Weds, Jeremy, Tanner and I had a super fun-filled Independence Day!
First, a pancake breakfast with Lucy & Chris Corey and their daughter Matilda.
Then, we rode bikes to the Huntington Beach parade. Tanner and Matilda got to ride together in the bike trailer. Tanner is 12 months and Matilda is 6 months.
Tanner: "Seriously, Mom? I can't believe you're making me sit next to a girl." Matilda: "I'm not so sure about this!"
Tanner really enjoyed the parade. He responded most when the band or any music was involved. He pointed to many, many things and waved his flag around lots. He also clapped a few times when others cheered or clapped. What a great little guy!
 The gang!
We watched the parade for almost 2 hours. It was still was going, but we decided to go home. Tanner fell asleep on Matilda during the ride back.
Matilda: "Help!"
Matilda: "Seriously, people. A little help would be nice. This thing on me is really annoying!"
After the parade, we went to the kitchen remodel place. We signed a contract for a new kitchen!! More info to come soon. Then, we went home and napped. For dinner, we ate next door at a block party. Then, we rode our bikes to the beach for the firework show. It was hilarious riding through town because this is the 1st year that HB allowed people to have their own fireworks. EVERYONE and their dog was doing fireworks on their driveway, so as we rode our bikes, it was like driving through a war zone! Explosions in front, behind, and right next to us! We even rode THROUGH someone's firework because there was nowhere else to go!
The show started before we got there :(  So we watched a few minutes of it on Main Street (with hundreds of other people!) But then Jeremy convinced me that we had enough time to go watch on the sand. We made it to the sand before the show ended! Thousands of people were on the beach! It was amazing- our favorite place to watch the fireworks. Tanner LOVED the show. He gazed and pointed at the fireworks and smiled lots. The noise didn't bother him because we had his sound muffs.
We had a super wonderful 4th of July! I am so grateful to be an American and to be a part of the amazing legacy of people that helped build and make this country before me. It was especially thrilling to experience the holiday with our sweet Tan Man.

One Year Old!!

It seems so weird that our child is ONE YEAR OLD! Sometimes it feels like the day he was born is worlds away. Other times it feels like it just barely happened. I remember holding him at 1 and 2 weeks old and thinking how long it will take before he is one year old. Now, his first birthday is here. Crazy!
By the way, don't you think we should call it the 2nd birthday. After all, his first birthday was the day he was actually born, right?
We started some family traditions with Tanner's birthday. We want our birthdays to be a day for celebrating life by being grateful for all that we have and all the people that make our life so wonderful. So in order to celebrate, we decided there should be 4 components to a birthday "party": 1) Simple 2) Special 3) Service oriented and 4) Spending to a minimum.

We had a lot of fun following the 4 "S" rules. We kept it Simple by going out to dinner with just Jeremy, me and Tanner. That meant minimal planning, cooking, and cleaning. We also had a very simple gift for him: a small cake and balloon. We made the day Special by singing to Tanner every time that he woke up from sleeping. And I sang him birthday songs all day long, which is a repertoire of about 6 birthday songs. We also decorated his helmet with some birthday paraphernalia. For the Spending part of his birthday, we only spent a total of $8!
These are pics of Tanner on his birthday. He is playing with some baby gifts for his future cousins. He loves the vibrating swing and figured out how to turn it on and off.
Picture below: How big is Tanner? SOOOO big!
As mentioned above, we went out to eat for his birthday. The Italian restaurant in Newport Beach was super yummy! We went because we had a gift card.
Tanner LOVED the bread sticks with olive oil and garlic. He also gobbled up the ravioli.
Our dinner was super yummy and cheesy!!
Everyone in the restaurant sang to Tanner. He looked completely flabbergasted! He just gazed wide-eyed at everyone with a slightly surprised and confused look on his face. Then we gave him the cake. He dipped his fingers in the frosting and was so perplexed that it was sticking to him. He kept showing the man behind us. The man was so nice to him, talking to him and touching his frosting. Tanner didn't want to eat the frosting at all. He eventually pushed the cake away! I was really shocked since he loved my chocolate bar from a few weeks ago.
For the Service oriented part of his birthday, we went to the Orange County Food Bank on Saturday. We called ahead to make sure that Tanner could join us. They were very excited to have a baby come! We filled boxes of food for poverty stricken senior citizens in the community.
We worked with a girl scout troop and a Buddhist charity group. Our goal was to fill 800 boxes in the 2 hours, but we ended up filling 982!!
Tanner was a really good sport. He watched from Jeremy's back while he worked on filling dried milk and I taped the filled boxes shut. After a while, Tanner got really sweaty in the backpack carrier, so I held him and showed him around while Jeremy taped and moved the filled boxes. Jeremy and I took turns watching Tanner while the other person worked. Tanner also chilled in the stroller for a little while, too. During one of my turns watching Tanner, some PR men from the Buddhist charity group asked if they could interview me about bringing Tanner to the food bank on his birthday. They hooked me up with a mic and filmed me! They said we might end up on a Tawainese news story!
It was a LOT of fun and a LOT of work. For the first 20 minutes I was super energized and pumped. But then I started realizing this was a lot of physical work, more than other times that I've done this! I admit there were a couple times when I wondered, "Are we done yet?!" When we did finish, I felt so accomplished! We were told later that our jobs- taping and stacking the filled boxes- were the hardest. Jeremy especially worked up a great sweat!
It was important to me that we did something meaningful like this on Tanner's birthday as a way to give back to the community. There have been so many people- family, friends, coworkers, church members- that have done a lot for us this past year. It was kind of my way to say thank you to all of them and to our Heavenly Father for all that we have been given during Tanner's first year of life. And when Tanner is older, I think it will be really cool to tell him that he helped fill 982 boxes of food on his first birthday.

Summer is here!

The last day of school/teaching was June 15. There are only 8 weeks of summer break, so I am trying to savor every day with Tanner. So far, it has been awesome!
This is a new pass time for Tanner. He dumps all the books off the shelf, then digs through to find one he wants to read. Then, he will peruse through the book, usually turning the pages from right to left! He points to things on the pages and sometimes will gasp with excitement at a new page. With thicker books like the scriptures, he will flip through the pages quickly by holding a chunk of pages with his thumb and index finger, letting the pages flip past his thumb.
I brought this drum home from school. He loves it!
What a good Captain America face!
We go outside everyday. It's the best way to keep the house clean. :)  It also gives us a chance to air out Tanner's helmet and his head, which get pretty sweaty in the warmer weather.
Yes, this rice formed mold in every color of the rainbow. It stayed in the fridge a few too many weeks- yes, weeks. This was mostly because I didn't want to wash the tupperware dish (we don't have a dishwasher).
Jeremy and I play a lot of ball games on the stairs. They mostly consist of throwing the ball up the stairs and watching it bounce back down. Tanner watches every time. Last week, Jeremy heard Tanner by the stairs, came over and found him trying to throw his ball up the stairs. It mostly just got shoved into the stair above his head, but we were really excited that he was trying our game!
A couple of days ago we went to the beach with my friend Marci and her son. We live in the same neighborhood and have become great friends through church. The boys loved playing in the sand together! We witnessed the boys' first moment of jealousy. They both wanted the green shovel, and neither of us had ever seen our boys get jealous like that before!
Rockford hated his beach hat, and Tanner didn't like Rockford wearing it either because he couldn't see his face! So it was funny that both of them were trying to get Rockford's hat off.
Tanner was the bravest he's been at the beach. He crawled far and wide along the sand. Rockford soon tagged along!
Baby in a suit & tie equals CUTE!
I got the pants, shirt and vest for $3. Our neighbor was selling all her baby stuff for cheap!
We're getting ready for 4th of July!!! Tanner and I have several outfits for the season. It's my favorite holiday other than Easter. Yesterday, we got a bunch of decorations from the 99cent store! I'm getting so excited!!!
I introduced flags to Tanner. At first he just watched it blow around. Then I gave it to him to hold, but he let it fall out of his hands, a little nervous. Now he loves them, waves them around, jiggles them, grabs and wrinkles them. He held and waved a smaller flag the entire time we were in the 99cent store, which was a good 35 minutes!
